To the trees<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I worked for a long time without setting a theme, but before I knew it, what appeared through my hands was \u2018tree\u2019.
In the 1980s, when I was looking for Deokseong Hanji under Jangseong Dam to get Hanji, I was so absorbed in the delicate flow of the grain that I unrolled the bark of the mulberry tree from a lump of mulberry, the main material for Hanji, and my hands were probably swollen, so I unrolled the bark all night long. I couldn\u2019t throw away the branches that had separated from the bark and revealed white flesh while working with the inner bark of the mulberry tree, so I brought them into the work, and I picked up the bamboo slats from discarded plastic umbrellas. Anyway, I always felt sorry for the things that were being thrown away, and I thought about how I could use them again, so it became a habit, and sometimes I feel like I\u2019m living among the things that are being thrown away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although this is my first solo exhibition in five years, this time, too, it has become a work of upcycling, a new trend that gives new value to things that are being thrown away. One of them is the banners that hang on the street trees around us every day. After time passes, their usefulness is exhausted and they are rolled up and thrown away. I made an eco-bag by collecting them. They were so strong that I realized their value, and now they have been transformed into works of art. I collected the banners, washed them cleanly, cut them, sewed them, made strips, and reconnected the strips to make them. A unique texture appeared and they became \u2018trees\u2019 again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were relief trees on a flat surface, and now they are three-dimensional like real trees. Sometimes they are placed on desks as small trees, or they appear in empty corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are trees that I have seen on some mountain or some walking path, and the various trees in the schoolyard that I have seen over the past 44 years seem to be reborn in me with a new look.
They remind me of the many benefits that trees give us. A small tree that quietly poked its head out as a sprout, sometimes with water and other organic matter of nature, grows strong despite the excessive sunlight and wind due to the weather’s whims, giving us the oxygen that is absolutely necessary for our lives, providing cool shade, making toys and furniture, building houses for us to rest in, and even cutting down stumps to become chairs for our tired steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, I think about what I can do for the trees and try to plant even one more tree to make the small space I live in fresh. I hope that the joy of this moment I am working on will always be eternal with the trees, and as the continuation of moments continues my life, I always give meaning to the moments and send greetings to the trees on my walk today.
