업 사이클링(Upcycling)에 대한 작은 시도

우리들 일상에서 많은 사물들이 그 쓰임새를 다하면 쓰레기라는 이름으로 사라진다.
최근에 많은 사람들이 리싸이클에 대해 생각하고 실천에 옮기는 모습은 가슴 뿌듯하다. 작년 학생들의 졸업 작품집 봉투 대신 학교에 지천으로 널려있던 현수막을 모아 가방을 만들어 나눈 적이 있다.

늘 무언가를 버리지 못하는 습성으로 받은 꽃다발을 싼 종이에서부터 택배로 보내져온 박스, 박스를 묶었던 끈들, 작아져서 버리게 되는 청바지, 작업하고 남은 실, 양모, 과자 포장지, 셀로판지, 작업하고 남은 한지, 염색하고 남겨진 천들 등등……

이러한 재활용 자원을 새로운 모습으로 업사이클링 해보려는 마음이 내 방 가득한 지난 추억의 물건들을 나무로 다시 살려내 작은 액자로, 입체조형물로, 가슴 위 브로치로, 핀으로 , 머리 장식으로 쓰임을 있거나 아니거나 별 신경 쓰지 않고 다른 이들의 삶에 기쁨을 주는 무언가로 존재하기를 소망하는 마음으로 작업하였다.

나무 역시 우리들의 생존에 절대적 역할을 하는 산소를 뿜어주듯 이러한 자원들이 재탄생되어 또 다른 무언가로 나에게 우리들에게 위로가 되었으면 한다.

A small attempt at upcycling

In our daily lives, many things disappear as trash when they are no longer useful.

It is heartwarming to see many people thinking about recycling and putting it into practice recently. Last year, instead of the students’ graduation project envelopes, I made a bag out of the banners that were scattered all over the school and shared them.

Since I have a habit of not being able to throw anything away, I have collected the paper that wrapped the bouquets I received, the boxes that were sent by courier, the strings that tied the boxes together, the jeans that were too small to throw away, the threads, wool, snack wrappers, cellophane, the leftover Korean paper from work, the fabrics left over from dyeing, etc… …

With the intention of upcycling these recycled resources in a new way, I revived the objects of my past memories that filled my room and made them into small picture frames, three-dimensional sculptures, brooches for my chest, pins, and hair accessories, hoping that they would exist as something that brings joy to others’ lives, regardless of whether they are used or not.

Just as trees emit oxygen, which is absolutely essential for our survival, I hope that these resources will be reborn and become something else that will provide comfort to me and us.
